We always find ourselves in hot water when we speak ill of the chardonnay. It’s not that we flat out don’t like the grape, it’s just that often times it becomes a crutch; easy to grow, easy to make, easy to drink. Rarely profound.
So when a couple tons of fruit from Steve Mudd’s 40 year old Musque clone Chardonnay crossed our radar, we took the bait. Instead of going the lazer thin stainless steel route, we figured we’d barrel ferment it in large wood casks. To really pull out the aromatics of the Musque clone we left it on the skins for 7 days. This wine choose it’s own fate, fermenting naturally for over 4 months, going through secondary on its own. We only added a bit of sulfur at the end.
Beware acid hounds, this is a rich opulent chardonnay….but with no oaky overtones. Tropical fruit abounds, going into Gewürztraminer land and the palate is like slow grinding to Al Green’s “I Can’t Get Next To You”. Soil: Gravelly loam
